Conquering Peaks, part deux
On Tuesday, July 16, 2013, our car climbed to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, elevation 6,288 ft, the only mountain in the Eastern US that is taller than East Tennessee’s own Clingman’s Dome. On the 7.6 mile drive up Mt. Washington, starting at about 1,600 ft elevation, the average grade is 13% and climbs almost a vertical mile! (6,288-1,600=4,688 < 5,280 by only 592ft)
The auto road is the little black line that snakes along the top half of the map shown below.

It was very windy on the mountaintop. The fastest wind ever was recorded here at a speed of 231 mph, from a house that was chained to the ground.

And here is the sign marking the summit!

The drive down the mountain was challenging – and we had to pull over several times to cool off the brakes. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful adventure up and down Mt. Washington!
